A Grave Left Behind

Maha and Abdullah, parents of five children, are from Dara’a, where the Syrian civil war began in 2011 after teenage boys sprayed anti-government graffiti on a high school wall. The boys were taken into custody and tortured for weeks; this heavy-handed approach touched off protests in Dara’a that spread throughout the country. Maha’s two youngest children, twins, were only 40 days old when her family left Syria, crossing first into Jordan and living there for more than a year before coming to the U.S. Here, Maha wondered for many weeks where the neighbors were. Then she learned that in Baltimore, everyone doesn’t routinely gather in the afternoons or at night on porches to talk and share food. She tries to keep Syria alive for her children through regular video chats with their cousins in Syria and through the dishes she prepares daily. One of her biggest heartaches about leaving Syria is that she can no longer visit the grave of Malek, her daughter who died as a one-year-old. (Artist: Jianan Liu)

(Artist: Jianan Liu)
