Jose, 21, can recall in vivid detail when eight armed gunmen swooped into the El Salvador auto shop where he worked as a mechanic and told his boss they needed to kill someone that day. His boss had been paying them off, but they finally demanded so much money that his boss refused, prompting the threats. Jose’s boss and his colleague were at the front of the shop. Jose was in back working on a car. Overhearing their words, he dropped to the ground and slid under the car, where he hid for more than two hours. “My heart was beating fast. I was afraid, thinking of my mother. I thought they would kill my boss and my friend and then come looking for me.” After a neighbor alerted the police, they left without killing anyone. His boss closed down the shop, hid for six months, and then began repairing cars out of his home with Jose’s help. It wasn’t long before the threats began again, though, and this time they were aimed directly at Jose. “I told them if you want to kill me, come on,” Jose says. “I was trying to sound brave, but inside I was scared. They responded, ‘Count the hours, because soon you will be gone.’” Jose’s family told him he must flee the country, and so he parted with his girlfriend and made the trip across the border into Texas, arriving in June 2019. He has put in an asylum claim. In the meantime, undocumented, he studies English and waits. “Most Americans put all immigrants in the same bag; they think we are gangsters,” he says. “But I just came to live a better life.” (Artist: Stephanie Baker)

José, de 21 años, puede recordar con vívidos detalles cuando ocho hombres armados se precipitaron al interior de la tienda de autos en El Salvador donde él trabajaba como mecánico y le dijeron a su jefe que necesitaban matar a alguien ese día.
