Paco, 73, began life in Venezuela in a humble home, the third oldest of 13 children. He got his first job at age seven, selling newspapers on the street. Though money was always tight, he was happy child, and close to his Catholic family. His grandfather taught him to meditate. He married his first and only girlfriend after they met at the insurance company where they both worked. He rose through the ranks to eventually become company president. He studied in Switzerland, wrote books about the insurance industry, and then began his own company as an insurance broker. As president of his local Rotary Club, he raised donations to build a hospital to treat addiction. Venezuela’s president, Carlos Andres Perez, supported the hospital, and connected Paco to other politicians, who bought insurance from him, allowing his business to flourish even further. He employed about 60 people and had all the money he needed, multiple homes and cars with chauffeurs. But after Perez was driven from office on corruption charges, to be succeeded by Hugo Chavez, Paco’s fortune changed. “I made money easily because I was connected to politics, but it was the biggest mistake I ever made,” he says. Under Chavez, he lost his entire fortune. Four years ago, when his wife became ill with cancer, they came here for her treatment. He first believed he could work within the insurance industry, which was his expertise, but that wasn’t possible. After briefly taking jobs in construction and landscaping, he paid for fake documentation and today works as a dishwasher in two restaurants, earning minimum wage. “I can’t believe how we are living now,” he says. “Everyone is an immigrant in America, so I don’t understand why we are treated so badly. De Harapos a Riquezas a Harapos

Paco, de 73 años, comenzó su vida en Venezuela en un hogar humilde, el tercero de 13 hijos. Obtuvo su primer trabajo a la edad de siete, vendiendo periódicos en las calles. A pesar de que el dinero era escaso, él era un niño feliz y cercano a su familia católica. Su abuelo le enseñó a meditar. Al inicio creyó que podría trabajar en la industria de las aseguradoras, la cual era su área de experiencia, pero eso no fue posible. Brevemente después de tomar trabajos en construcción y paisajismo, pagó por documentación falsa y ahora tiene dos trabajos como lavaplatos en dos restaurantes, ganando el salario mínimo. “No puedo creer cómo vivimos ahora”, dice él. “Todos son inmigrantes en Estados Unidos, por lo que no entiendo por qué nos tratan tan mal.
